The chart shows car owners in households in UK from 1951 to 2007. Overall, car ownership increased significantly and there is increasing trend for households to have more than one car.
At the beginning of the period, almost 90% of households did not have a car. From this year, the percentage decreased dramatically, until 1975. However, it continued to fall but dramatically and ended up above 20%. The percentage of one-car owners mirrored this trend and reached to 45%, same amount as households with no car, in 1975. Then it remained unchanged until the end of the period.
In contrast, households with two or more personal vehicles saw an 10times increasing during this period each. In 1951, around 3% of households had two cars. Notably, two-car-owning households began to increase slightly, and ended up with almost 30%. While, the percentage of households that owned more than two cars was less then 1% and saw an increase very late (in 1969), likely to previous trend it also reached 10 times more of it’s initial rate.
