The line graph illustrates the proportion of households owning no car, one car, two cars, and three cars in the UK between 1975 and 2005.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of households owning two and three cars showed an upward trend throughout the period, while the opposite was true for households with no car. Notably, the proportion of households owning one car fell in the middle of the period before returning to its original level by 2005.
Looking at the categories that increased, the percentage of households owning two cars started at just 7% in 1975. It then rose steadily to 14% in 1985 and 15% in 1995, before climbing further to 18% by 2005. Similarly, the figure for three-car households began at only 3% in 1975, increasing gradually to reach 9% by the end of the period in 2005.
Turning to the other two categories, the proportion of households with no car stood at 43% in 1975, the highest figure on the chart. This then fell sharply to around 25% in 1985, before declining gradually to 22% by 2005. Meanwhile, the percentage of households owning one car began at 45% in 1975, dropped to 38% in 1985, then recovered to reach 45% again by 2005, the same level as at the start.
