The table and chart below give data about the number of doctors in Australia between 1986 and 2006.

The doctors were classified into three categories: male, female, and those from other countries, and all three work in Australia. In 1986, 50% of the doctors were males, and 10% less were females. With regard to Australian doctors to other nationality doctors, the proportion was approximately 60% Australian doctors compared to 35% doctors of other nationalities.

In 1996, after ten years, the proportion of female doctors had doubled since 1968, reaching 55%, while male doctors reduced to 40%. The proportion of Australian doctors decreased to 50%, which is less than 10% than in 1986. However, doctors who traveled to Australia from different nations have increased up to 5% in addition to the 50% they had already in 1986.

In 2006, the figure of international doctors went down to the same number in 1986. The Australian doctors went up again to the same percentage they were at in the first year, however, more of the doctors were males and the rest were females. Between 1986 and 1996, the total number of doctors increased by around 100.000 each year, and by 1996, the total number of doctors had increased by more than 200.000 to reach 800.000, including doctors from both Australia and other countries.
