Overall, there were varied percentages across all sport branches participated by male and female. Among girls, 25% played netball compared to boys, at 0%, accounting for the most popular sport for girls, and around 22.5% mentioned swimming compared to boys, at 12.5%. Athletics was common for girls, slightly higher than boys, constituting almost 5%.
In contrast, the majority of boys played soccer, around 25%, accounting for five times as much as the proportion of girls, 5%, while other sports were commonly played by boys, at just under 20% compared to girls, at 10%. The figures for tennis and basket in both sexes shared a similarity, standing in the range of 5% and 10%. Similarly, Cricket and Martial arts were popular among boys at around 10 compared to girls.
It can be understood that there was a trend towards netball and swimming for girls, while boys found soccer and other sports more enjoyable. However, athletics was the least popular sport for boys and girls to participate in New Zealand compared to others.
