Looking from an overall perspective, it is clear that adult fiction and children’s fiction showed an upward trend over the four decades, while the categories of bibliography and others witnessed a downward trend. The only category that experienced fluctuations over the years was travel.
Initially, in 1972, the others genre was dominant in the chart, accounting for 25%, while travel had the lowest figure, at 15%. Adult fiction, children’s fiction and bibliography represented the same proportion of sales, at 20% each.
In 1992, adult fiction reached its peak at 25%, while bibliography decreased by 5% and was recorded at 15%, which was also the lowest figure in 1992. The second-highest genre was children’s fiction, at 22%, while others accounted for 20% and travel for 18%.
In 2012, sales of adult fiction represented the highest percentage, at 45%, while bibliography had the lowest figure, at only 8%. Children’s fiction made up 25%, making it the second-largest category in the chart. Others accounted for 12%, while travel represented 10%.
