The pie charts provided illustrate the proportion of sales of one bookseller for the years between 1970 and 2012. Overall, both adult fiction and children’s fiction witnessed an overall upward trend over the period, while biography and others section experienced a dramatic decline throughout the period. Meanwhile, the travel section showed a sharp fall, despite a slight increased in middle.
In 1972, others section accounted for the highest percentage of overall sales, at 25%, All three sections, namely adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography recorded the same proportion of sales, stood at 20%, whereas travel represented only 15% of sales of one bookseller. In 1992, both adult fiction and children’s fiction increased gradually to 25% and 22% respectively. Biography and others section experienced a slight decrease, falling to 15% and 20% correspondingly, while the travel section grew slightly to 18%.
By contrast, by 2012, adult fiction continued to rise and reached its peak of 45%, whereas children’s fiction also increased marginally to 25% of overall sales. While biography, travel and others section experienced a sharp decline, reaching 8%, 10% and 12% respectively.
