The chart compares the number of road vehicles which were registered and in use in a European country including Lorries, Bus, motorcycles, private cars and other types in 1996 and 2006.
In general, what stand out from the chart is that the proportion of registered road vehicles in 2006 was the highest while that of in 1996 were the lowest over the period. In addition, it can be seen that Private cars were the most commonly used means of transport and the bus were a lowest one.
In 1996, private cars were by far the most commonly used type of vehicle, at approximately 19 million.By contrast, the figures for motorcycles and other types were much lower, both standing at around 1 million. Meanwhile, lorries and buses accounted for the smallest proportions, with well below 1 million vehicles each.
By 2006, the number of private cars had risen significantly to about 24 million, remaining the dominant category.The figures for other types and motorcycles showed slight changes, at roughly 2 million and under 1 million respectively.In comparison, lorries and buses still had the lowest numbers, despite experiencing marginal increases over the period.
