The line graph shows the percentage of people from four different age groups who attended the gym at least once a month between 1990 and 2010.
Overall, the proportion of gym-goers increased significantly across all age groups during the period. From 1998 onwards, the 18–24 age group had the highest participation rate, while those aged 45 and over remained the least active throughout.
In 1990, around 10% of people aged 25–34 years old went to the gym once a month, followed by the figure for the 18–24 group at around 8%. The percentage of people aged 25–34 attending the gym significantly grew to around a half at the end of the period. Meanwhile, the figure for the latter group surpassed that of the former group in 1998, then increasing sharply throughout the period by nearly 60% in 2006, dropping by half then recovering to its peak in 2010.
The 35–44 group experienced a gradual increase, starting at about 5% in 1990, rising slightly to 20% in 2002, before increasing significantly to 40% in 2010. In contrast, the 45 and over group began at just under 5%, increased slightly and remained below 10% until 2002, then increased slightly to reach 20% by 2010.
