The line graph illustrates the population of Japan by age groups starting from 1960 with a forecast until 2040. Overall, the 65+ age group saw an increase, while the proportion of people aged 25-64 and 0-14 registered a decline. Noticeably, the 25-64 age group remained the largest proportion.
In 1960, the percentage of people aged 65+ stood at about 5%, followed by a gradual rise until 2000 to around 15%, before a rapid increase to 30% in 2020, ending with approximately 35% in 2040. Meanwhile, the 25-64 age group stood at nearly 65%. Until 2010 this fluctuated between 65% and 70%. In 2030, there was a slight drop to approximately 55% and then recovered to roughly 58%, by the end of the period
The 0-14 age group stood at 30% at the beginning, experiencing a growth to nearly 35% in 1970. However, in 1980 it witnessed a drop to roughly 29%, and ten years later percentages did not change. Subsequently, this figure suddenly started to drop until the end of the period to 10%.
