The bar chart illustrates how many hours wives and husbands from two age groups (24-44 and 45-64) worked per day in paid and unpaid employment at home, in addition with the total number of working hours.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the total number of hours worked by married women was considerably greater than that of married men. The amount of unpaid work done by wives aged 24-44 and 45-64 was ultimately bigger than the number of working hours in unpaid work of husbands, which resulted in a higher average hours of work. The hours worked by married men in paid employment tend to remain consistent across two age groups. In contrast, the number of hours worked by women in paid employment showed a slight rise as they became older (45-64 years old).
In terms of individual items, wives aged 24-44 worked around 5 hours a day in unpaid employment, while husbands the same age worked approximately 3 hours a day. Furthermore, both females and males worked fewer hours at home at the age of 45-64. As for paid employment, while married men consistently worked 7 hours per day in both age groups, married women aged 45-64 experienced an increase of 2 more hours at work compared to their younger selves.
