The bar chart compares the average price per kilogram of clothing imported into the European Union from seven different countries in 1997 and 2003.
Overall, the price of clothing from Tunisia increased significantly and became the highest among the seven countries in 2003. In contrast, the prices of clothing from India, Indonesia, China and Bangladesh all decreased. Morocco was the only country where the figure remained almost unchanged.
In 1997, Morocco had the highest average price, at about 18 euros per kilogram, followed by Tunisia at 17 euros. Turkey and China had similar figures, at around 16 euros. The prices for India and Indonesia were lower, at approximately 14 and 13 euros respectively. Bangladesh had by far the lowest price, at only 8 euros per kilogram.
By 2003, Tunisia experienced a considerable increase, with its average price reaching 24 euros per kilogram. Turkey also saw a rise, from 16 to about 19 euros, while the figure for Morocco stayed stable at around 18 euros. On the other hand, the prices in the other four countries fell. India decreased from 14 to 10 euros, while Indonesia dropped from 13 to 9 euros. China also experienced a fall, from 16 to 11 euros. Finally, Bangladesh remained the cheapest source, with its figure declining from 8 to only 5 euros per kilogram.
