The bar chart describes the changes in the proportion of families with cars in a European nation from 1971 to 2001.
Overall, while the rate of households with both one car and two cars went up, the opposite trend was true for that of no-car ownership. In addition, the figure for homes that had two cars was generally the least popular throughout the period.
In the first decade, the percentage of families owning two cars stood at under 20%, followed by a considerable increase to nearly 30% in 1981. In contrast, there was a substantial decrease in these two figures, to roughly 42% for not owning a car and about 35% for single-car ownership.
Over the next decade, the proportion of households who owned no car remained stable at 29% until 2001. Meanwhile the figure for owners of two cars was the lowest in 1991, at only 22%, and then rose significantly to approximately 30% in 2001. On the other hand, one-car families witnessed a steady fall, from around 50% to below this point at the same time, yet still dominant.
