The chart illustrates the number of male and female research students studying science-related subjects – Physics, Astronomy, Geology, Biology, Medicine and Veterinary medicine – in 2009 at a UK unversity.
Overall, majority of both men and women studied biology and medicine, there were significant gap in physics, astronomy and geology which those categories showed higher figures for men, whereas the figure of women was higher than that of men in veterinary medicine.
In detail, for men, biology, physics and medicine were popular representing about 230, 220 and 200 respectively. Although biology and medicince were also prominent among women accounting for 200 and 190 respectively, physics was least common subject for female students representing under 50. Besides, similar figures were shown in astronomy and geology for male students which represented both 150 and those of women accounted for 60 and 80 respectively.
On the other hand, figures for male students were higher than those of female students in all categories except veterinary medicine, which accounted for 90 and 120 for men and women respectively.
