The graph illustrates the different modes of transportation children chose to travel to and from school in a country between 1990 and 2010.
Overall, almost every mode of travel has faced a decline from 1990 to 2010, except for the car mode, which has shown a significant increase.
In 1990, the walking mode was the most preferred amongst the other types of travel, with just over 12 million trips per year. Meanwhile, cycling, walking and bus marked around 6 million trips per annum, and only the bus with approximately 7 million. Interestingly, car passengers were the least amongst the rest of the modes with around 4 million annual trips, which then became the most preferred mode in 2010, with close to 12 million per annum.
In 2010, the trends changed: walking dropped to 6 million, cycling to 2 million, walking and bus to close to 3 million, and the bus to about 5 million per year. However, car passengers dramatically increased from just over 4 million to around 11 million per year.
