Overall, the proportion of UK-born residents declined steadily throughout the period, while the figure for Asian-born people increased significantly. In addition, the total percentage of overseas-born people fell slightly in the early years before rising again towards the end of the period.
In 1976, almost 29% of Australian residents were born overseas. This figure decreased gradually to around 23% in 1986, before increasing steadily to approximately 32% in 2011. By contrast, the percentage of people born in the UK showed a continuous downward trend, falling from about 14% in 1976 to just 5% in 2011.
Regarding the other regions, the proportion of Asian-born residents rose consistently over the period, from roughly 3% in 1976 to about 15% in 2011. Meanwhile, the figure for people born in other regions declined slightly from around 11% to 8% in the 1980s, before climbing steadily to nearly 14% by the end of the period.
