The bar chart depicts the participation rate in percentage among five age groups of UK children ranging 3 to 18 years old, compared with the average data around the globe.
Overall, compared to the world average, UK kids were highly involved throughout early childhood. And the rate in girls were lower than boys initially, but surpassed boys as they age.
Boys in age 6-8 had the highest participant rate, topped the whole chart at around 90%, and the peak rate for girls was over 80% in 3-5 age group. Both genders in UK demonstrated an over-average participation rate, as the world’s data was just over 70%. Moreover, girls in these age groups had lower participation rate than the other gender.
Here the trend showed a twist when children were older in their pre-teen years (9-11 years old). Participation rate of UK witnessed a significant drop to roughly 60% in both genders, meanwhile the world average rose to its highest position of more than 80%. This below-average trend continued among the teenagers of 12-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds in UK, with boys’ participation percentage (40%) lower than girls’ (slightly fluctuated between 50%-60%). Compared to boys, girls in these later years had a smaller gap with the wold average (around 60%.)
