The given bar chart illustrates the gender distribution of teachers in six different types of education settings in the UK in 2010
Overall, the chart shows that female teachers dominated in early childhood education. However, the opposite was true for higher education levels, where the percentage of male teachers was substantially higher. Additionally, nursery and pre-school showed the most significant difference between the proportions of male and female teachers.
Looking first at the educational settings with a higher percentage of male teachers, private training institute recorded a slightly higher percent of males than females, at approximately 55% and 45% respectively. To be more specific, the percentage of male teachers in university was significantly higher than that of their female counterparts (70% vs 30%). In college, however, both genders enrolled in equal proportions, at around 50%.
Turning to the remaining educational levels, females outnumbered males in all cases. In primary school, the percentage of female teachers was nearly 16 times higher than that of males, at about 80% compared to 5%. A similar pattern can be seen in nursery and pre-school, where the figure for females stood at 90%, compared to appoximately 10% for males. A slight female dominance was also evident in secondary school, with around 55% of female teachers versus 45% of male teachers.
