The bar chart gives data on the share of males and females involved in different leisure activities in England in 2006.
Overall, watching TV was the most common free-time activity for both genders. Notably, the share of men was higher in all the categories, except spending time with family and shopping.
As for the activities that men were engaged in, watching TV ranked first, with (a hefty) 85% spending their free time this way, while time with family came (a close) second, with the share of men accounting for around 77%. Meanwhile, the figures for doing sport/exercising, reading and using the Internet took up nearly 75% each. Shopping, in the meantime, was much less common, with 30% of men doing it, which was nearly a third of the figure for watching TV, whereas playing computer games came last, with 11% of men playing them.
Regarding the activities that women did, watching TV and spending time with family were the main activities, with the share of women engaged in these activities comprising 83% and around 82% respectively, whereas shopping was common with 74% of women. Meanwhile, doing sport/exercising and reading followed, constituting about 60% each, whereas the figure for using the Internet was half as much, accounting for around 35%. Playing computer games, by contrast, had by far the lowest share, with (a mere) 5% of women doing it in their free time.
