Overall, the trend for recycling was increasing throughout the period. In addition, although cans were the most recycled type of waste in the beginning, glass had become by far the most recycled material by the end of the period.
Delving into specifics, 10% of plastic waste was recycled in 1992, after which it stabilized at approximately 12% till the final year. As for cans, this material reported just under 20% of recycling, the highest recycling rate in 1992. After decreasing slightly to roughly 14% in 1997, this figure had skyrocketed to about 24% by 2002.
The recycling rate of paper and glass was the same at the outset of the period, each at well over 10%. Both of these indicators surged by the end of the period, with respective figures of 40% and almost 50%, making glass the most recycled household waste.
