The bar chart illustrates how students’ gender distribution at a UK institution varied among six art-related programs in 2011.
Overall, the percentage of female students exhibited an increase in subjects throughout the 2011 year, while male students experienced an opposite pattern, except for Art and Design. Communication and Media Study had the highest female enrollments, while English language and Literature attracted the most male students. and both programs were popular choices.
Among the six subjects, Linguistics, English language & Literature, and Communication & Media Study had more enrollments. Specifically, the Communication & Media Study constituted the highest number of women participating, with around 270 female students in the United Kingdom university and approximately 60 more than the number of male students. Similarly, Linguistics had an almost identical pattern of female dominance, where around 250 women and 190 men studying. Conseverly, English language & Literature had the highest male proportion, it had 230 male students pursued the subject, but still lower than 250 female students.
The remaining three subjects showed a noticeable gender difference. Philosophy had three times as many female enrolments as male counterparts, with 150 and 50 respectively. Likewise, there were approximately 90 men and 125 women enrolled in History & Archeology. Art & Design, on the other hand, was the only subject that which the number of male enrollments exceeded that of females, with around 170 men studying, compared to 155 women.
