The chart illustrates the percentage of survey participants expressing interest in 6 different types of sport, namely football, swimming, rugby, snooker, tennis, and golf, in the UK from 1995 to 2005.
Overall, while the proportion of respondents interested in football, swimming, and rugby increased albeit at varying rates over the period, a downward trend can be seen in the percentage of people voted for snooker, tennis, and golf. Additionally, football received the highest level of interest among survey participants.
Looking at increases first, the proportion of football fans stood at 45% in 1995, a figure that then experienced a considerable steady increase and peaked at 50% in 2005. A contrasting pattern can be observed in the figures for respondents interested in swimming and rugby, with the former climbing from 25% in 1995 to 30% in 2000 before dropping to about 27% in 2005, and the latter, however, decreasing initially from 27% to 25% and then rising sharply to 30% in the same years.
By contrast, turning to the percentages of people voted for snooker, tennis, and golf, they accounted for 30%, 27%, and 25% at the beginning year, respectively. After an initial decline, an increase was seen in both figures, with snooker fans from roughly 22% to 25%, and golf fans from about 23% to 25% between 2000 and 2005, while the figure for people interested in tennis exhibited steady decrease, finishing the period at approximately 22%.
