The bar chart illustrates the results of a European survey about expectations of the young generation for change in five distinct areas of life over the next 20-year period.
Overall, young people expect that things will get worse but only communication between people represents a positive majority. However, a large majority of people expect that the quality of air in urban areas will get worse while the quality of food shows almost an equal percentage for both expectations.
As for communication between people, it is the only category which shows the highest positive expectations, at 54%; negative expectations account for 46%. The quality of food represents an almost equal distribution between both expectations, at 49% and 51% respectively. In contrast, the quality of water shows 40% for expected improvement, while the percentage of pessimistic responses is 1.5 times higher, at 60%.
Turning to the quality of air in cities and health categories, the quality of air has the lowest percentage of positive expectations, at 23%, while negative expectations indicate the largest share, at 77%. In contrast, the health category does not have as large a gap as the quality of air, accounting for 42% and 58% respectively.
