Overall, Spending increased in almost all categories over the period, the most growing products seen in food and smartphones.In contrast the amount of money spent on books declined slightly.Food remained the category with the highest spending in the both years.
In 2010, young adults spent around $40 million on food, which rose to approximately $45 million by 2014. Expenditure on clothes stayed constant at around $25 million over the same period. Meanwhile spending on books dropped from $12 million to just under $10 million, making it the least popular categories in 2014. There was a significant increase in money spent on smartphones, rising from around $20 million in 2010 to roughly $28 million in 2014. Similarly, spending on toiletries exprienced a small but noticeable rise from $17 million to $19 million.
