The given bar chart compares the proportion of female final-year students who entered higher education in five different countries namely the UK, the USA, Canada, Japan and Germany between 1970 and 2005.
Overall, the percentage of female students choosing to go into university education in 2005 was always higher than that in 1970. Besides, the amount of school-leavers moving on to higher education in Canada in both 1970 and 2005 was the highest, while that in Japan was the lowest.
In the year 1970, the proportion of female students in Canada was the highest, at 60%, which was 10% higher than that in Germany and 25% higher than that in the UK. In addition, the figure for the USA was 40%, which was twice as high as that for Japan.
Turning into 2005, the figure for the UK and Canada was the highest, at 60% which was closely followed by the USA and Germany with about 58% and 55% respectively. Furthermore, Japan still remained the lowest place in both two years, at 40%.
