The bar chart illustrates the gross domestic product generated from the IT and Service Industry in the UK from 1992 to 2000, measured in percentages. Overall, it is clear that both sectors increased their share of GDP, with IT maintaining a higher percentage throughout the period.
In 1992, the service industry accounted for 4% of GDP, while IT represented just over 6%. By 1996, the service industry saw a moderate increase to 7%, while IT fluctuated, starting at over 6%, peaking just above 8% in 1994, and then dropping slightly to nearly 8%. The gap between them narrowed during this time.
In the second half of the period, there was a noticeable difference in the trends of the two sectors. The service industry only rose by 1% from 1996 to 2000, whereas IT experienced a significant surge, jumping from 7% to 12% in 1998 and then stabilizing at 15% by 2000.
By the end of the period, IT’s share of GDP was nearly double that of the service industry.
