The bar chart illustrates the percentage of people living alone across five different age categories in the United States from 1850 to 2000.
Overall, it is clear that older people from 55 to 64 dominated in 2000, whereas youth group was the least popular throughout the period. Of particular note is people between 27 and 54 age groups that remained relatively stable over the period.
In 1850, people under 26 showed approximately 1%, while other groups recorded similar proportions around 3%. After a century, the proportion of individuals living alone increased remarkably: youth group grew to 2%, whereas individuals above 55 reached 9%. Furthermore, individuals from 27 and 54 remained relatively steady.
In contrast, the most significant gap is seen in 2000. According to the chart, older people accounted for 17%, which was by far the highest figure, while youth group represented only around 5%. Similarly, individuals between 47 and 54 outnumbered individuals from 27 to 36, 13% and 8%, respectively. Moreover, people between 37 and 46 displayed only 7%.
