In both years, rail travel accounted for approximately 40 billion passenger kilometers, while bus usage was slightly higher, 40 billion in 1990, and around 42 billion in 2000. Air travel had the lowest figure in 1990 , at roughly 5 billion, athough it almost doubled to 10 billion by 2000.
Bicycle and motorbike travel were both at around 10 billion passenger kilometers in 1990. In 2000, bicycle usage dropped to about 7 billion, while motorbike usage remained roughly unchanged.
