The columns illustrate the total distance covered by passengers using different modes of transport in the UK in 1990 and 2000.
Overall, bus and train are the two most popular means of transportation while fewer people use bike, motorbike and plane. The distance travelled by the studied types of transport generally increased from 1990 to 2000 with the exception of bicycle and motorbike.
The distance covered by people using bike started at less than 10 kilometers in 1990 before halving to about two kilometers in the next ten years. A same situation was recorded for motorbike which was used to travel approximately five kilometers in 1990, twice that in 2000. However, the distance covered by air passengers in 2000 was nearly three times that in 1990 (about five kilometers and two kilometers respectively). The distance travelled by plane passengers in 2000 was nearly two times higher than that by motorbike riders in the same year.
Turning to the remaining categories, there was a slight difference of practically 2 kilometers in the distance travelled by bus users in 1990 and 2000, which was the same for train. It is also evident that the total distance covered by different means of transport also increased throughout the studied period, rising from 100 kilometers in 1990 to about 150 kilometers in 2000.
