The bar charts illustrate the proportion of people employed by gender in the UK in both 1998 and 2012.
Overall, the total number of people employed saw a notable increase in all categories from 1988 to 2012. Proportion of part-time workers remained almost the same, whilst there was a shift in gender distribution for full-time workforce.
The biggest group in 1988 was male, full-time workers which accounts for more than half of the complete workforce at 53%. This group experienced a slight decline to 47% but kept its dominance. As opposed to 4,482,000 in 1988, the number of female, full-time workers rose by approximately 3.3 million, occupying just over a quarter of the working population by 2012.
The option of part-time employment was not popular among men in both years, with 6% and 7% in 1988 and 2012 respectively. Despite the drop in percentage by 2% of female working part-time, the actual number of this group saw a 700 thousand increase. The share in the part-time category remained as a little more than one-fourth throughout the period.
