The two pie charts compare the proportions of residential water consumption across five different household activities in 1988 and 2008.
Overall, while water consumption in the kitchen and bathroom increased substantially, the figures for other categories experienced declines, particularly in garden use.
In 1988, water used for washing recorded by far the highest percentage, at 25%, followed by the figures for bathroom and garden at 22% and 20% respectively. By 2008, the percentage of water used for washing had declined to 22%, whereas water consumption for gardening dropped dramatically to 7%. Meanwhile, water used in bathroom increased to 28%.
By contrast, around 18% and 15% of water was used for toilets and kitchen. Although kitchen water use increased sharply to 29%, the figure for toilets declined to 14% by the end of the period.
