The pie charts compare the proportions of residential water use in two separate years: 1988 and 2008.
Overall, the share of water usage in the kitchen and bathroom was higher in 2008 than in 1988, while the reverse was true for garden, toilets and washing. Notably, although the figure for washing accounted for the largest share at the outset, it was overtaken by both kitchen and bathroom by 2008.
In detail, there was a notable disparity between kitchen and bathroom in 1988, at 15% and 22%, respectively. The proportion of water allocated to kitchen then almost doubled to 29%, becoming 1 percentage point higher than the figure for bathroom (28%).
In stark contrast, a considerable amount of water was allocated to washing and garden in 1988. The former was significantly higher than the latter, accounting for 25% compared to 20%. Despite experiencing a substantial decrease by 2008, the figure for washing was roughly threefold that of garden, at 22% versus 7%. As for toilets, they made up 18% of total water consumption in 1988, before witnessing a modest decline to 14%.
