The first line graph compares household ownership of washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the ownership rates of all three examined types of domestic devices increased, but to varying extents. Notably, laptops saw the most significant increase over the period, eventually securing the leading position, which they shared with vacuum cleaners in the final years.
In 1920, washing machines were the most popular among the three devices, with 4 out of 10 households owning one. Despite a slight decline in 1980, the ownership rate gradually increased to 75% by 2019, but they lost their top spot in popularity.
In contrast, refrigerators had the lowest starting point, at just 2% ownership, but experienced a remarkable surge, with 90% of households owning one by 1960, to reach 100% from 1980 onwards. Vacuum cleaner ownership increased more slowly than refrigerators, but it eventually caught up and reached 100% in the early 2000s, reflecting a considerable increase of 70% since the initial year.
