The charts show the percentage of water used for agriculture, industry and domestic purposes in six different regions of the world.
Overall, agriculture uses the most water in South America, Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia, while industry is the main use in North America and Europe. Domestic use is the lowest in most regions.
In North America, 48% of water is used for industry, compared to 39% for agriculture and 13% for domestic use. Similarly, Europe uses the highest amount of water for industrial purposes, at 53%, while agriculture and domestic use account for 32% and 15% respectively.
On the other hand, agriculture is the biggest water user in the other four regions. Central Asia has the highest percentage, with 88% of water used for agriculture. Africa and South East Asia also have high figures, at 84% and 81% respectively. Domestic use is relatively low in these regions, ranging from 7% to 12%.
Finally, South America shows a different pattern compared to the other agricultural regions. Although agriculture still accounts for the largest proportion at 71%, domestic use is higher at 19%, while industry uses only 10% of water.
