The charts compare women’s and men’s time consumption in minutes per day on household and leisure activities in the UK in 2008.
Overall, TV, radio, and video were the most prevalent leisure activities in both genders, while cooking and washing consumed the largest time in these genders. Moreover, men spent much more time in all leisure activities compared to women, who dedicated more time to household tasks.
Regarding recreational activities, watching TV, and videos, and listening to the radio were by far the most common, with men spending more time than women ( 137 compared to 118 minutes per day). These numbers were slower in reading books, which was the sole activity in which women spent more time than men, with respective figures of 19 and 18 minutes per day.
In terms of household chores, cooking and washing occupied most of the females’ time, at 75 minutes per day, which doubled the figure for males. These numbers were slower in shopping, with averaging 35 minutes per day for males and 35 minutes per day for females. This pattern continued to be observed in clothing washing and ironing, while females spent about 30 minutes per day, and this number was three times more than in males. Conversely, the amount of time men spent on repairs was twice as much as that of women, at nearly 20 minutes.
