The provided bar charts depict the number of modern foreign language learners in various countries whose mother tongue is English from the age of 14 to 16 years old and the most common foreign languages from 1984 to 2007.
Generally speaking, the charts show that females outnumber males in students who study foreign languages. Despite that a dramatic decrease was observed over the period of 1984 to 2007, French was always the most popular of three languages.
According to the given information, the proportion of both girls and boys went in a downward trend with girls declining to a low of about 40% percent in 2007 from almost 50% at the start of the period. The same thing happened with male students which dropped from 30% to around 25%. Over 24 years, the percentage of female students was always higher than male figures.
Although being the most common language during the period of time, French suffered from a notable fall from 50% in 1984 to almost 25% in 2007. The trend for German language was the same but with a slight fall from 20% to almost 15%. In contrast, while Spanish learners are less than other two languages, it was the only country with an upward trend with about 5% difference.
