The pie charts compare the primary factors why students chose a particular university in the UK in 1997 and 2007.
It is noticeable that the proportion of students citing suitable degree courses remained the most popular factor over the ten-year period, while the share of students citing good sports and social activities fell sharply. Also, the proportion of students citing proximity to their parental home increased considerably.
In 1997, suitable degree courses were the leading factor, accounting for 35% of students, and this figure rose slightly to 37% in 2007. By contrast, the figure for sports and social activities fell dramatically from 19% to 6%, while the quality of resources declined from 21% to 17%.
Turning to the remaining factors, the percentage of students who considered the quality of teaching increased slightly from 15% in 1997 to 18% in 2007, a rise of 3 percentage points. More notably, the figure for proximity to the parental home more than doubled, climbing from 10% to 22% in a decade, overtaking the quality of resources and holding second place.
