The pie charts compare the distribution of water consumption across five different sectors in Sydney, Australia, during two years: 1997 and 2007.
Overall, it is clear that the food industry accounted for the largest proportion of water usage in both years, despite experiencing a decrease. In contrast, water consumption increased in the service industry and manufacturing sector, while the building industry recorded the smallest share throughout the period.
In 1997, the food industry was the primary consumer of water, taking up nearly half of the total usage at 48%. Household use was the second-largest category at 19%, followed closely by the service industry (13%) and manufacturing (15%). The building industry accounted for the remaining 5% of total water consumption.
By 2007, the proportion of water used by the food industry had dropped to 41%, though it remained the largest sector. Conversely, water usage in the service industry nearly doubled to 25%. Manufacturing and household use saw slight shifts, rising to 11% and 21% respectively. Meanwhile, the share of water used in the building industry decreased to just 2%.
