Overall, it can be observed that the number of Japanese tourists increased generally over a 10-year period. Consequently, the Australia’s share of Japan’s tourist market rose notably at that time.
As far as Japanese tourist’s quantity is concerned, it stood at around 5 million individuals in 1985, then increased gradually to approximately 15 million in 1990. Then after a slight decrease by 1m in the next year, it rose to just under 12m in 1992, and approximately remained unchanged for a year after that. Following that, it experienced a steady increase to 13.5m and then rose sharply to around 15.5m in 1995.
In the case of the percentage of tourists who went to Australia, it began at 2% in 1985, and increased steadily to just under 5% in 1988. After decreasing to 4%, it rose gradually to above 6% in 1993. Following that, it decreased by around 0.5% in 1994.
