The charts illustrate the proportion of time spent by younger and older people on different Internet activities in their leisure time, excluding emailing. Overall, it can be seen that young people tend to use the Internet mainly for social networking, whereas older individuals devote the largest share of their online time to making bookings. Another striking feature is that younger users spend a notably higher percentage of time on entertainment-related activities than their older counterparts.
Commencing with the younger generation, social networking accounted for the largest proportion, comprising 24% of their total Internet time. Researching and accessing music and films followed closely, each making up 20%. Playing games ranked next, representing 18% of total online time, while making purchases stood at 12%. By contrast, making bookings was the least favored activity among this group, at only 5%.
Turning to the older population, making bookings took the highest share, constituting 25% of their total Internet usage. Interestingly, they allocated similar amounts of time to researching and social networking, at 22% and 21% respectively. By comparison, making purchases represented a smaller proportion, about 12%, while playing games recorded the lowest figure, at just 5%.
