The chart illustrates information about how water is used for various purposes in 6 areas of the world.
Overall, most water is used for agricultural purposes in the given areas, except in North America and Europe, where most water is used for industrial work.
Agriculture accounted for more than half of the water use in Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, and South America (84%, 88%, 81%, 71% respectively). In Central Asia and Southeast Asia, the same volume of water is being utilized for domestic purposes, which is 7%. Compared to South Asia, South America consumes twice as much water for household use, and nearly the same volume is being consumed by Africa (10% and 9% respectively). Among Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America, not much water is required for industrial purposes—only a small percentage is used (7%, 5%, 12%, 10% respectively).
In contrast, nearly half or more of the water is required in North America and Europe (48%, 53% respectively) for industrial use. For agricultural purposes, 32% and 39% are required in these two continents. Only 13% of the water in North America and 15% of the water in Europe is required for domestic use.
