The pie charts illustrate the proportions of water utilization for industrial, agricultural, and domestic purposes in different areas around the world.
Overall, the most favored way in the majority of regions is agricultural water use, while in North America and Europe, this option ranked second. Another noticeable feature is that domestic use is the least preferred method of water utilization among three areas, while, in a few cases, it ranked second after the farming one.
In terms of agricultural usage, Central Asia and Africa make the majority, with the figure for the former comprising 88% and for the latter 84%. Similarly, the share of South East Asia in farming water utilization accounted for 81%, whereas the percentage of it in South America amounted to 71%. In contrast, it was the second most popular option in North America and Europe, figures standing at 39% and 32% respectively.
As for industrial purposes, in Europe the percentage of water utilization made up 53%, a figure which exceeded that of North America (48%) by only 5%. However, South East Asia and South America followed them, reflecting just above a tenth (12%) and one in ten (10%) respectively. It was the least popular method in Africa and Central Asia, where the former constituted 7%, while the latter stood at 5%. Concerning domestic purposes, the share of water use in South America, Europe, and North America (19%, 15%, and 13%) outstripped those in Africa, Central Asia, and South East Asia, which showed almost a tenth (9%, 7%, and 7%).
