The bar charts compare the percentages of men and women aged 60-64 who were employed in Belgium, the USA, Japan, and Australia in 1970 and 2000.
Overall, employment rates were significantly higher for men than for women in all four countries. While male employment generally declined between 1970 and 2000, the proportion of employed women increased in most countries. |
In terms of men, Japan recorded the highest employment rates in both years, with 85% in 1970 and 74% in 2000, despite a noticeable decrease. Similarly, the USA saw a reduction from 73% to 55%. Australia also experienced a substantial decline, falling from 76% in 1970 to 47% in 2000. The most dramatic change occurred in Belgium, where the percentage dropped sharply from 79% to only 19%.
By contrast, female employment figures were much lower overall but showed slight growth in several countries. In the USA, the proportion rose modestly from 36% to 39%, while Japan experienced a small decline from 43% to 40%. Australia saw an increase from 16% to 18%, whereas Belgium remained very low, decreasing slightly from 8% to 7%
