The two bar charts provide an overview of physical activity among adult men and women in England during the 2016-2017 period, showing both their activity levels and the specific types of exercise they chose.
Overall, men tended to be more physically active than women. However, while “walking for leisure” was the most popular activity for both genders, men showed a much higher preference for organized sporting activities compared to women.
Regarding activity levels, a higher proportion of men were seen as “active” at 63%, compared to 58% of women. In contrast, women were slightly to be “inactive,” with 27% falling into this category compared to 24% of men. The “fairly active” group showed the least difference, with figures of 13% for men and 15% for women.
Regarding specific activities, the most popular physical activity for women was walking for leisure, with nearly a quarter of them taking part. This was followed by the percentage of ladies who did fitness activities, which was approximately 19%. They were much less likely to do walking for travel. The proportion of sports activities by men were far more active in general sports activities, roughly 29%, compared to just 17% of girls. The least common activity for both was dancing.
