The given bar chart provides information about the number of English learners from different age groups in Vietnam between 2015 and 2018, whilst the pie charts illustrate various reasons for their choice.
As can be seen from the bar graph, the majority of students who learnt English came from age group 17-24. It is also notable that to pursue overseas education acted as the main reason why the surveyed students decided to study this language.
Started in 2015, age group 17-24 witnessed a significant increase over the next two years. Specifically, twice as much as students studied English in 2017 than those before (20 learners as opposed to nearly 10 learners). One year later, this figure reached its peak at 40 learners, which was quadruple to the beginning of this period. The number of 17-24-year-old English pupils completely prevailed the other groups as none of the rest exceeded 10 learners for the provided time. For example, only one 13-16-year-old student studied this language in the first year, and, despite the considerable rise to 8 learners three years later, this figure could still not be compared to the afore-mentioned dominating age group.
Regarding the pie charts, overseas education was the main factor affecting students’ decision to learn English; nevertheless, there was a slight reduction from over-half (58 students) to less than half (43 students) between 2015 and 2018. Similarly, school graduation followed the same trend, but with sharper decrease (23 to 6 students). Meanwhile, two new purposes for studying English appeared in 2018, with 25 and 6 learners aiming for job and scholarship opportunities, respectively.
