The two bar charts illustrate the average daily time spent on reading for pleasure and listening to music among five different age groups in New Zealand.
Overall, it is clear that reading becomes more popular with age, whereas listening to music is most common among the youngest and oldest age groups. While older individuals tend to dedicate more time to reading and show a renewed interest in music, younger people primarily focus on music and read far less.
In terms of reading for pleasure, the amount of time spent increases steadily with age. People aged 15-24 spend the least amount of time on reading, at around 20 minutes per day. This figure rises progressively across the age groups, reaching approximately 70 minutes per day for those aged 55 and over.
Conversely, listening to music follows a more varied trend. The 15-24 age group spends the most time on this activity, averaging about 80 minutes per day. This number then declines with age, reaching its lowest point among the 35-44 age group at about 50 minutes. Interestingly, from the age of 45 onwards, the average time spent listening to music begins to rise again, peaking once more in the 55+ group at roughly 75 minutes.
