Residential properties received 70% of the Australian water supply in 2004, with 57% of this amount going to houses, and 13% to apartments. Industrial purposes came second by a significant margin, consuming only 11% of the water supply. The figures of water consumption for the business and the government sectors were 10% and 6%, respectively, whereas 3% of water was used to serve other purposes.
With regards to water supplied to households, approximately 28% of it was used in bathrooms, whereas for toilets, the percentage was smaller by 13%. Gardening required a quarter of the water received by houses and apartments, while a fifth was allocated for laundry. At 10%, kitchen amenities consumed the least amount of water at residential properties.
