The bar chart compares the main modes of transport used by people to travel to a university in 2004 and 2009.
Overall, there was a significant shift from car use to bus use over the five-year period. While cars were the dominant mode of transport in 2004, buses became the most popular option in 2009.
In 2004, cars were used by just over half of commuters, making them the most common form of transport. However, this figure fell dramatically to around one quarter in 2009. In contrast, bus usage increased substantially from approximately one third in 2004 to more than two fifths in 2009, overtaking cars as the leading method.
Bicycle use also rose moderately, from under 10% to 16%, remaining the third most popular option in both years. By comparison, walking and train use showed only minor changes. Walking increased slightly from 4% to 6%, while train use rose by just 1% over the period.
