Overall, staying with friends or relatives was the most popular choice in 1965, but hotels became the most popular type of accommodation in 1985 and 2005. Camping changed only slightly, while the proportion of people staying in caravans increased by 2005.
In 1965 staying with friends or relatives was more popular than staying in hotels with 55% compared with only 16%. However, this difference became much smaller by 1985, when the figures were 35% and 37% respectively. This was the first time that hotels became more popular than staying with friends or relatives. By 2005, the difference between these two categories had increased again, with hotels accounting for 38% while the figure for friends or relatives fell to 30%
Camping and caravans had almost the same proportions in 1965, at 15% and 14% respectively. Over the next 20 years, camping became slightly more common, reaching 18%, while caravans dropped to just 10%. This trend was reversed by 2005. The figure for caravans doubled to 20%, making it more popular than camping which fell to 12%
