The bar chart compares the proportions of men in a certain country who prefer watching different sports with those who prefer taking part in them.
Generally, fishing is the only sport in which the number of participants exceeds the number of spectators, while all other sports attract more viewers than active players, with football showing by far the greatest disparity.
In terms of spectators, football is the most popular, attracting 40% of men, which is considerably higher than any other sport. Basketball and horse riding/racing follow at roughly 36% each, while rugby and badminton are equally popular at 28%. By contrast, fishing records the smallest audience share at just around 12%.
When it comes to participation, fishing ranks first, with exactly half of the male population surveyed engaging in it, far surpassing all other sports. Basketball and badminton both have participation rates of around 25%, whereas rugby and horse riding/racing share the same figure at 20%. Football, despite being the top spectator sport, sees the lowest proportion of players, at just over 10%.
Overall, while team sports such as football and basketball tend to be watched by far more people than they are played, individual or leisure-oriented activities like fishing attract more active participants than viewers.
