The diagram depicts the design of a modern landfill and its aspects and how it is used to manage household garbage. Overall, the design includes three stages, such as construction, usage and closure. Whereas construction represents how landfill is made, the two remaining stages show potential use and what happens after landfill is closed.
At first, a hole is made in natural rock, which is then lined by clay and synthetic material. Next, in the prepared area drainage pipes and drainage tank are installed for liquid waste.
When construction of a landfill is finished, household waste arrives on trucks and storages there. In the landfill waste divides on liquid and non-liquid one by drainage pipes. After that, waste liquid is stored in separate tank, apart from non-liquid garbage. Finally, landfill is closed by clay cover. In this stage, pipe for liquid waste is provided, which allows gases to evaporate through it.
